Area Mundi : Trois œuvres d'art public du Montréal souterrain

Josée Bélisle, Louise Déry and Johanne Lamoureux

Montreal is famous for its underground city. Thirty kilometers of public transport and pedestrian walkways link over 60 residential and commercial complexes, including most cultural centres, shopping centres and all four universities, making it the most developed such infrastructure in the world. The creation of a new financial district (Quartier international) brought several bold new urban concepts to the fore, among them a new extension of the underground pedestrian passage. Conceived through a close collaboration among architects, urban planners and the business community, this new space now houses art works made specifically for the site. Dominique Blain, Michel Goulet and Isabelle Hayeur each created a triptych of primarily photographic and sculptural pieces that incite the passerby to stop, look and touch. This magnificent hardcover publication documents the site's artistic, urban and architectural qualities. Essays by prominent curators, artists' statements and an architectural map of the complex are accompanied by dozens of colour illustrations of this marvelous urban achievement.
